Like many artists, Robert Stebleton started painting at an early age. When he was in 5th grade, his teacher encouraged him by giving him a second desk for all of his artwork. Today he laughs at the thought of his two desks, but also credits that teacher for starting him on his artistic journey.
Robert was born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1947. As a young man he painted what he saw around him, Midwestern themes with barns and old farmhouses. His acrylic paintings were featured in prestigious national and international shows and he won many awards.
In 1988, Robert decided that he needed to experiment with other avenues in his artistic journey. He began woodcarving. In a partnership with the Decoy Shop in Freeport, Maine he created exact replicas of classic decoys that were commissioned by Williamsburg and the National Audubon Society. He later formed his own company, Stebleton Folk Art through which he created original designs that were purchased and reproduced as giftware by Dept 56, Possible Dreams, Cape Shore and Willitt’s Designs. His original whimsical carvings were sought after by collectors and he was written about and featured in many collectable magazines.
In 2001, Robert moved to Ocala, Florida. With renewed energy after a 13 year break, he was ready to return to painting. His style reflects a maturity that comes from artistic exploration and a life well-lived. A master at shadows and sunlight with flickers of color, Stebleton draws the viewer into his world. “I have lived and worked in many places, but my paintings are more than a travelogue, they are snapshots of my life.” His pallet that was once filled with subtle earth tones now also has vibrant color. Experience has shown him that hard work and not being influenced by current trends has given him his artistic voice. |
