About the artist
Hugh Holborn is an avid fisherman and enjoys the wide variety of coastal fish species available in North Florida. His prints of these fish are made from actual impressions of the fish he and his son Alexander catch.

Gyo-Taku
The transfer process is a Japanese technique called gyo-taku and involves painting the fish with inks or prints and then making an impression on paper or cloth. Hugh usually incorporates photographic elements into his work as well so that the final work is a composite of organic painted elements, photography and other scanned components.

Every Spring, as the flounder move into the Matanzas River, my son Alexander and I look forward to spending quality time together in search of these great fish. Our fishing expeditions invoke my own childhood memories when my grandfather would patiently take me to these same areas in hopes of hooking into a "big flatty". This 4lbs. flounder was caught using live finger mullet on the north side of Shark Island near the bayfront in St. Augustine.

Fishing has a wonderful way of bringing focus to my world, and keeping me in touch with my son, good friends and the beauty that lives in abundance in North Florida.
