On the morning Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf, I found myself sitting on the steps of a beach near my home in northeast Florida with a stranger, contemplating what was happening. He sat beside me as I was taking photographs of that beautiful, ominous sky over a calm ocean and simply said, "We are so lucky. Their tomorrows will be different from now on...". It struck me as ironic that this gorgeous sunrise could portend such destruction, but also that despite the devastation that was happening that morning, the promise of future sunrises seemed to lend an air of hope to a terrible situation.
